Did you love Organic Food?

Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation.

Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.

In Malaysia, there is a no legal definition for organic, so any farmer can claim their food is organic. However, we have an organic farming certification system where a farm is inspected once a year. The farmer has to keep a record of input and output, something conventional farmers don't do.

In Malaysia, organic food has gained more popularity in the last decade. Organic stores are mushrooming especially in the cities. Most Malaysians who consume organic food are those who have (or had) a medical condition such as cancer, asthma and allergies. Health-conscious consumers too are gradually switching over to organic. Most of these consumers, especially those whose immune systems are weak, eat organic food because they want to reduce the intake of pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertiliser residues in the food they eat.

10 Top Reasons to Go Organic

1. Organic produce is not covered in a cocktail of poisonous chemicals.
2. Fresh organic produce contains on average 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micro-nutrients than intensively farmed produce.
3. Going organic is the only practical way to avoid eating genetically modified food.
4. If you eat dairy or meat products, going organic has never been more essential to safeguard you and your family's health. Intensively-reared dairy cows and farm animals are fed a dangerous cocktail of anti-biotics, hormones, anti-parasite drugs and many other medicines on a daily basis, whether they have an illness or not.
5. About 99% of non-organic farm animals are now fed with GM food .
6. Organic produce simply tastes so much better.
7. Organic farms support and nurture our beautiful and diverse wildlife.
8. Organic food is not really more expensive than intensively farmed foods, as we pay for conventional foods through our taxes.
9. Intensive farming can seriously damage farm workers' health.
10.And if you simply like the idea of your children and grandchildren being able to visit the countryside and play in the forests and fields just like we did when we were young, go organic for the sake of all of our futures.
